The 90% silver Mercury Dime was minted in the U.S. between 1916 and 1945. It features a winged Liberty head on the obverse side. The image of Liberty bears a strong resemblance to the Roman god Mercury, which is how the silver Mercury dime got its name. It carries a Roman fasces on the reverse side. Also known as Lictors' rods, the facses consists of a bundle of rods surrounding an ax.
The design is a perennial favorite among coin collectors, and is considered to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing of all U.S. coin designs. A number of key years can have high numismatic value, depending on the condition of the coin.
Dimes are a good choice for those interested in investing in junk silver coins, as their size makes it easy to trade in smaller quantities of silver, and junk silver bags consisting primarily of dimes are more compact than other varieties.
Interestingly, the rough edge of the silver dime was originally designed as a countermeasure against counterfeiting, as well as shaving of portions of coins to collect profits on the dust. Modern dimes have no significant precious metal content, but the "reeded" edge has been retained in later issues for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it helps the visually impaired distinguish between different coins.
As with other junk silver coins, Ebay is the best place to acquire circulated Mercury dimes for their silver value.
