The Silver Morgan Dollar was minted between 1878 and 1921. All in all, over 657 million Morgan dollars were produced during this period in 96 different combinations of year and mint. Hundreds of millions have been melted down over the years for their silver value. Some by the federal government under the Silver Act of 1942 and the Pittman act, and other by private interests when the cost of silver rose to exceed the face value of the coin by a sufficient amount to make this profitable. Despite all this melting, a substantial volume of Morgan Dollars remains available for junk silver investors and numismatic enthusiasts alike.
The coin was named for its designer, George T. Morgan. The obverse of the coin features the face of Liberty. Philadelphia school teacher Anna Willess Williams posed for the design. The reverse features an eagle which is somewhat skinnier than the beagles featured on other U.S. coins. Some described the eagle as "scrawny," eventually leading to the nickname of "buzzard dollar" for the coin.
Soon after the initial design, the Mint was advised that eagles have seven tail feathers, rather than the eight shown on the original design. The result is that some Morgan dollars show the eagle with eight tail feathers, others with seven, and still others with seven over eight. The last variety is the most rare, although all varieties are still easy enough to find.
Like other silver coins of the era, the Silver Morgan Dollar contains 90% silver, with each coin having slightly over three quarters of an ounce of silver. The coins make excellent investments for junk silver buyers, as their larger size makes them easier to keep track of. The design is also one of the more popular among coin enthusiasts of all stripes.
As with other junk silver coins, Ebay is most often the best place to acquire circulated Morgan Dollars for their silver value, especially in smaller quantities.
