The Last Real Money Issued in the U.S.

Throughout the first half of the 20th century, most of the coins issued in the U.S. contained 90% silver. This meant that apart from their printed "legal tender" value, they have intrinsic value based on their silver content. Over time, because of inflation of the currency, these coins came to be worth more than their face value, as the price of silver rose.

The term "junk" silver originates from coin collectors, and refers to coins that were circulated, and have no value as collectibles. Their value arises purely from their precious metal content. While the name is less than appealing, junk silver coins have a number of unique properties that make them excellent investments.

First, junk silver coins have precious metal content that is certified by the U.S. government. Counterfeiting of coins is rare, so typically if you have a certain variety of coin and can read the date, you can be confident of its silver content. Second coins are conveniently sized, making them an easy way to trade in small quantities of silver, should the need arise. Finally, these coins are still considered legal tender, which means there is an absolute floor for their value - it can never go to zero. Even in the case of a total collapse in the price of silver, these coins can still be spent for face value.

The Silver Eisenhower Dollar was minted between 1971 and 1976. It is named for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose likeness appears on the obverse of the coin. The reverse of the original coin depicts an eagle with wings spread. Both sides of the originally coin were designed by Frank Gasparro. In 1975 and 1976, a bicentennial version was released, with the Liberty Bell on the reverse side, in front of the moon - commemorating the moon landing. The bicentennial version was designed by Dennis Williams.

Also known as the "Ike" dollars, the coins were minted exclusively in San Francisco. They rarely made it into regular circulation outside of casinos. Instead, they were distributed in two forms: uncirculated and proof. The uncirculated variety coins came wrapped in cellophane with a blue plastic token, encolsed in a blue envelope. The proof version came in a brown box with a gold seal. This led to the uncirculated coins being called "Blue Ikes," and the proof being called "Brown Ikes." The uncirculated "Blue" ikes originally sold $3, while the proofs sold for $10 .

Unlike earlier silver dollars in the U.S., "Ikes" are only 40% silver, with each coin containing a little under a third of an ounce of silver. The other 60% is made up of copper. Because they were issued only as collectibles, they are not generally found in circulation. Still, they are considered legal tender, like other U.S. coins.

Eisenhower dollars are not often traded as "junk silver," because they were never regularly circulated. Instead, they are mostly held by collectors for their numismatic value. That combined with the fact that they are only 40% silver makes them a less than ideal choice for junk silver traders. Still, "Ikes" are occasionally found in such poor quality that they fall to "junk" status, and like other junk silver coins, they have the advantage of legal tender status, and silver content certified by the U.S. government.

As with other junk silver coins, Ebay is most often the best place to acquire circulated Eisenhower Dollars for their silver value, especially in smaller quantities.

The Silver Peace Dollar was minted between 1921 and 1935. The coin was initially designed by Anthony de Francisci, who won a design competition, beating out famous designers such as Chester Beach, John Flanagan, Hermon A. MacNeil, and Adolph A . Weinman.

Despite winning the contest, the original design was actually rejected. The reverse depicted an Eagle holding a broken sword, which some associated with defeat. Accordingly, George Morgan designed a new reverse without the broken sword, which ended up on the coins that were minted.

Other changes came later. The original obverse design had an unusually steeply curved surface, making the coins hard to stack, and hard to strike, resulting in an abnormally high rate of breakage of the dies used to stamp the coins. The relief was lowered in 1922 because of this.

The coin got its name because the design was intended to be "commemorative of the termination of the war between the Imperial German Government and the Government of the United States." The word "peace" appears on the lower edge of the reverse side, Oddly, the Peace Dollar was not well received upon its initial release, despite its attractive appearance. It has since become popular, and now peace dollars are in high demand among coin enthusiasts of all varieties.

The peace dollar was the last 90% silver dollar to be minted for circulation in the U.S. (The Eisenhower Dollar minted between 1971 and 1976 contained only 40% silver.)

Like other silver coins of the era, the Silver Peace Dollar contains 90% silver, with each coin having a little over three quarters of an ounce of silver. The coins make excellent investments for junk silver buyers, as their larger size makes them easier to manage.

The Silver Morgan Dollar was minted between 1878 and 1921. All in all, over 657 million Morgan dollars were produced during this period in 96 different combinations of year and mint. Hundreds of millions have been melted down over the years for their silver value. Some by the federal government under the Silver Act of 1942 and the Pittman act, and other by private interests when the cost of silver rose to exceed the face value of the coin by a sufficient amount to make this profitable. Despite all this melting, a substantial volume of Morgan Dollars remains available for junk silver investors and numismatic enthusiasts alike.

The coin was named for its designer, George T. Morgan. The obverse of the coin features the face of Liberty. Philadelphia school teacher Anna Willess Williams posed for the design. The reverse features an eagle which is somewhat skinnier than the beagles featured on other U.S. coins. Some described the eagle as "scrawny," eventually leading to the nickname of "buzzard dollar" for the coin.

Soon after the initial design, the Mint was advised that eagles have seven tail feathers, rather than the eight shown on the original design. The result is that some Morgan dollars show the eagle with eight tail feathers, others with seven, and still others with seven over eight. The last variety is the most rare, although all varieties are still easy enough to find.

Like other silver coins of the era, the Silver Morgan Dollar contains 90% silver, with each coin having slightly over three quarters of an ounce of silver. The coins make excellent investments for junk silver buyers, as their larger size makes them easier to keep track of. The design is also one of the more popular among coin enthusiasts of all stripes.

The Kennedy Half dollar minted between 1965 and 1970 contained 40% silver. In 1965, the mint removed all silver from dimes and quarters, but elected to have the Kennedy half dollar keep some silver content to honor the recently deceased president.

The coins are made up of an inner layer of 79% copper and 21% silver, wrapped or "clad" in an outer layer comprising 80% silver and 20% copper. In total, the coins contain 40% silver and 60% copper. Because of this construction, they are also known as "Silver Clad" coins.

The design of the coin is substantially the same as the 1964 90% silver half dollar, featuring the likeness of President John F. Kennedy on the obverse, and an eagle with wings spread wide on the reverse.

As one might imagine, the 40% silver Kennedy Half is less popular among junk silver investors, because of its lower silver content. An investor must keep a much larger quantity and weight in coins in order to have the same amount of silver as with other junk silver coins. Nevertheless, silver clad half dollars are a perfectly valid method of investing in silver, and they have many of the advantages shared by all junk silver coins: metal content certified by the U.S. government, ease of transport and divisibility, and a legal tender value placing an absolute floor on their price.

The Silver Kennedy Half dollar was minted in 1964, beginning just three months after President Kennedy's assassination. Although produced for only one year, over 277 million 1964 JFK half dollars were minted. The design of the coin features the likeness of President John F. Kennedy on the obverse, and an eagle with wings spread wide on the reverse. The obverse of the coin was designed by Gilroy Roberts, and the reverse was designed by Frank Gasparro.

The Walking Liberty half dollar (sometimes called the "walker" among enthusiasts) was designed by A.A. Weinman, a German-born sculptor and student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

World War II brought on the rationing of many commodities. At the time, nickel was in short supply, and in high demand for use in armor plating. Accordingly, Congress suspended use of nickel in the coins on October 8, 1942. From that date until 1945, "nickels" consisted of an alloy of silver, copper, and manganese, with silver comprising 35% of the total weight of the coin.

The design during the war remained substantially the same, except for a large mint mark on the reverse side of the coin, centered above the dome of Monticello. The letters used were "S" for the San Francisco mint, "D" for Denver, and "P' to for the Philadelphia mint. This was the first time the letter "P" was used as a mint mark on a U.S. Coin - prior to that time, Philadelphia coins carried no mark.

Apart from the distinctive mint mark, the war nickel can be distinguished from other issues by its distinctive color, brought about by the different mixture of metals used.

The war nickel is not the most popular among junk silver coin collectors, for the obvious reason that they are only 35% silver. They are more commonly collected for their historical or numismatic value. The Silver Roosevelt dime was first minted in 1946 to honor Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, shortly after his death. It consisted of 90% silver and 10% copper, and was designed by Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock. It continued to be minted until 1964.
